The Story of Radio Control

Radio Control is the dynamic duo of Matty Studivan and Kristina Otero. Their debut album "Hot Audio" came out last year and yours truly created their album cover and art.

They told me the story of their recording process in their triple decker apartment and it sounded like a great example of energetic artists making it happen for themselves. They recorded in the basement with like a hundred and sixty mics with wires running up the chimney, past their roommates, up to their computers in the attic to mix and record songs. This seemed like the perfect thing to draw for the inside of the disc.

Holiday Stickers

Each year I create holiday stickers for old friends and new to celebrate the winter fun times in December. This year I have been drawing a lot of hats - these ginormous amalgamations of my characters fashioned into a giant cap that Aretha Franklin may wear at the next presidential inauguration. They may prove to be too heavy in real life but fun as a sticker.

This is a vector based application like Adobe Illustrator and my first project is drawing each President of the United States of America. Dirty Water Collectives

This past summer I had the pleasure to work with Pat Falco & Elliott Anderson of the Lincoln Arts Project in Waltham, MA curating a show of Boston art collectives. I have a fascination with collaboration among artists and a recent obsession with the city's history. I modeled the show logo after the city seal which can be found on vehicles, street signs and letterhead all over town featuring a view of the city from sitting in a boat on the Charles River. It's an often over looked and old piece of city history.

I am thrilled to have so many artists I admire and look up to in the show. There are close to 200 different works from over 75 artists in 13 collectives. The range of work is wonderful to see too, it is full of drawings, prints, digital paintings, videos, comics, posters, paintings, a gas can, masks, a giant moose head more drawings, ice cream cones and much more. Last summer, recent art school grad Pat Falco, 24, was painting the house of a Waltham artist and wondering whether he should take a 9-to-5 job like some of his friends or make a go at immersion in the art world.

He's managed to do both. Thanks to the short-term painting gig—the house belongs to John Thompson, who owns the former Jordan's Furniture building on Waltham's Moody Street—Falco is now managing the building while running the Lincoln Arts Project, a gallery he co-founded with his friend in the building's lobby.

“There's a good young arts scene in Boston,” said Falco. The problem young artists face, he said, is trying to break into the established gallery scene which skews toward older, established artists.

Mass Art Mural

I was invited this summer to paint a mural on campus at the Massachusetts College of Art & Design by the good folks who run the computer lab in the tower building. Meg Young and Clint Baclawski asked me if I would like to help them dress up the blank wall that greets everyone when they arrive on the 3rd floor. This floor is a wonderful hub of activity in the college filled with computers, ginormous printers, tons of plants and the most helpful interesting faculty & staff ready to lend a hand to students.

Big thanks to Clint for giving me this opportunity and to Pat Falco who graciously helped out with some presidential drawings on the back side. Check out the mural when you have a chance at 621 Huntington Ave Boston MA on the 3rd floor of the Tower Building.

Boston Cyclist Union

Keynote Speaker Caleb Neelon

Caleb Neelon is an artist and writer based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He came to our attention when we read his “Ten short memos to young Boston artists”, a terrific and pointed article that he wrote for Greg Cook’s blog, The New England Journal for Aesthetic Research. He was also interviewed in April by Andrea Shea on NPR about Boston’s role in The History Of American Graffiti, Caleb’s recently published landmark book co-authored by Roger Gastman. Caleb also recently completed a large installation for the show “Wall Works” at the deCordova Museum which opens June 11. Caleb will be a speaker for TEDxBoston in late June. TEDxBoston is an event where local innovators and forward thinkers share their passion, curiosity, and tenacity to change the world with their revolutionary ideas. We are very interested to hear what Caleb has to share and you will be too! Please join us.

This week I suddenly looked up and realized I passed a personal milestone at my job at Harmonix without noticing it. I did some quick math during a meeting and figured out I have created drawings for 100 plus different pieces of art for stories on RockBand.com and even more for The Rock Band Network.

As I flipped through some of these articles and podcasts I kept noticing how many amazing, hilarious, innovative, super-bright and far out people I have the privilege of working with. RBN 2 Point OH!

It was only on year ago when RBN - a site dedicated to users authoring playable tracks for Rock Band - launched and unleashed a storm of awesome music onto the fans of Rock Band. In honor of the 1 year anniversary I came up with a new set of characters based on the evolution drawing from last year's launch. Instead of an ameoba evolving into the King of Rock we begin with a sweet singing lady bug and end with the Queen of RBN.

I recently created some drawings for my friends Giuseppe Taibi & Daniele Calabrese over at Soundtrckr to promote their rad music application available for nearly any mobile device you possibly have all over the world. I am thrilled to see them doing well and I enjoy the surprises that I hear when listening to the music on the app. We worked closely together to create this party scene of some of my characters enjoying themselves while listening to some tunes in the city.

Harmonix artist Sherika Vitureira asked me to paint on her cool Princes-Leia-on-Hoth-like coat this winter. I was psyched to work with her, she does amazing illustrations for Harmonix games and it was great fun coming up with the design for the coat.

We came up with a few designs and went with the wiener dog, ice cream cone, bunny & birds combo. Harmonix designer Alli Thrasher modeled the finish piece:

“Robot GUTS (Gears, Utensils, Tools & Stuff): Fish McGill & Friends - Montserrat 301 Gallery”

What's inside a giant robot? Let's find out and learn a thing or two or three. You are invited to join Boston Artist Fish McGill in the installation & creation of two 12-foot tall Robot drawings Monday-Thursday in the 301 Gallery. Come help work on a giant drawing of a Robot's GUTS and gears on the gallery walls throughout the week. Answer the ongoing question, "What is inside a Robot anyway?" The collaborative drawing project will shine light on this subject. Computers, cell phones, wiener dogs, rocket parts, you name it and it is in there.

The kickoff is on Friday February 4, 2010 from 6-9PM in the 301 Gallery. We will install the two 12 foot Robots in the space. Be ready to climb ladders and drill panels as we hang the colorful robot parts and prepare for a week’s worth of work. The 301 gallery will be open all week February 7-10 during the day and in the evenings. Come draw with us or hang out with some Robots. Lessons on creating stencils and how to make wheat paste will be demonstrated on Wednesday & Thursday afternoons. Special guest artists from the Boston area will be stopping by in the evenings to draw with everybody who participates throughout the week.

At the fancy pants closing reception on February 10 from 6-9PM please arrive dressed to impress for some milk and cookies as the Robot’s panels will be raffled off for free to all the guests at the Robot GUTS closing reception in the 301 Gallery.

Star Wars Guitar Solo

My friend Abby 2 here is posing with a guitar we found on the discard table of our office at Harmonix. A good friend of ours named Abby 1 is a big Star Wars fan and I did some drawings on the found Rock Band Stratocaster for her.

I put Vader, an Ewok, the death star and more on the toy in need of a home. I couldn't believe how pumped she was for the guitar, it totally made my day to see her rock out with it and make up a song on the spot. I bet this guitar is psyched too to have a new home and continue its life before landing in a recycle bin in a galaxy far, far away.

Karmaloop - Fish McGill & Amanda Clarke

On a chilly Black Friday afternoon, our host Karmaloop graciously invited me and Amanda Clarke to paint at their store brought. We spent the afternoon painting out doors on Newbury street as out of towners and Bostonians walked by, some even said hi or a weird comment or two. Karmaloop brought out a pair of gloves for my nearly frozen fellow artist and as the day became darker we experienced the "magic hour" first hand followed by immediate weenie shrinker cold weather.

My dear wife Sheryl came by to take some pictures and cheer us on with some of her hilariousness. It was really fun to see all sorts of unexpected friends from the last decade walking up and down the street too. All sorts of people were in town heading home from Thanksgiving and I would have missed out on catching them if we were not on the street. Mr. Never was our MVP guest bearing the cold in a leather coat and a v-neck tee as our source of wisdom and entertainment cracking jokes and playing tunes for us to keep us pumped.

Sheryl and I spent the last year working on our wedding together each weekend and most evenings after work. We had our hands in every aspect of the process coordinating nearly all of it together with huge help from our family and friends at the finish line. One of the most fun parts was designing the invite together.

We aimed to set the mood of our ceremony and reception on October 10, 2010 as a awesome, weird, colorful day full of merth with the invite. During the process we came up with a secret code for the front and back to see if our guests could figure it out. A few actually did! Can you? Here is the front:

I was invited by Mr. Dave Schlafman & Mr. Matt Moore to paint a few murals in their new animation studio for CloudKid. It was an honor to spend the day painting in my underwear (I forgot my painting jeans) and it was so fun to see their new space unfold in front of me while I worked.

The Purple Robot Project

Last week I invited friends on Facebook & Twitter to participate in The Purple Robot Project. I get pumped up when I go to these social sites and see what everyone is up to but still feel a disconnect from all the good friends on there. The project is an experiment to keep in touch with friends as if I am there with everybody hanging out and drawing together in person.

The gist is this: send me your address and I will send you a Purple Robot via snail mail. In return I have asked each participant to send me a picture of how they decide to display the bots at there house. These bots have currently traveled all over the US, to Texas, Massachusetts, California, New York and more.

3 years ago my friend Jamie returned from a west coast trip with an awesome manual transmission Toyota truck. The one caveat was the bashed in passenger seat door. Jamie asked me if I would like to paint the dent to give it some character and we got down to business this past weekend.

Another dream came true after painting Jamie's truck. Karl Stevens was at the painting party and I mentioned how I have always wanted to be in one of his strips and he made it happen this week. So rad!

The duo is known for their penchant for drawing together, pushing themselves and each other artistically & for having fun. The new pieces in the show are part of Fish & Evoker’s ongoing series of drawings and paintings inspired by animals, skateboard graphics, music, Star Wars™, robots and more. WHO ARE THESE GUYS?

Ryan Robidoux (Evoker) is a professional graphic designer/painter currently living in the beautiful city of Boston. When not working, Ryan can be found obsessing over old skateboard graphics, making stickers and exploring the city with friends.

Fish McGill works for Harmonix Music Systems as an artist & designer and enjoys life as an artist devoted to drawing. Fish has received commissions for drawing and design projects by The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), the Boston Graphic Artist Guild, the Berwick Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Nike, MTV, Deitch Projects, Company One Theater, Harmonix, IdN, Adobe, and The Weekly Dig. Fish earned his BFA with honors from Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

MONSTERS? REALLY?

Yes really! Evoker & Fish have teamed up designing a series of Party Monsters for the Monster Party. These creatures, forged by collaborating on drawings back and forth until they are appropriately weird and wild, will be on view at the show. Come and see a few of them for yourself this May.

Lessons on creating stencils and how to make wheat paste will be demonstrated on Thursday afternoon in the gallery followed by a Robot Birthday Party reception. Come and answer the age old question, "What is inside a Robot anyway?"; The collaborative drawing project will shine light on this subject. Computers, cell phones, weiner dogs, rocket parts, you name it and it is in there.

Christmas Bike Surprise

I was blown away on Christmas morning when I unwrapped this bike from my fiance Sheryl. It looked so familiar too. Turns out I was onto something; working in cahoots with my good friend Evoker, Sheryl absconded my Fish Bike of the last 13 years and had it transformer-ed in Optimus Prime colors by the folks at Open Bicycle in Somerville, MA. The details are the best part too. Here is a rundown:

The metal fenders are painted red and the frame is painted light blue to match my wiener dog that chills out with us in our home.

They made this really cool metal dead fishy thing with my name engraved on it and added the X for an eye. Nice touch.

Sheryl went the extra mile and added the always handsome handy basket to the front. Alas, she does not fit in it like ET as she does on the handlebars of my other bike.

All the details make this bike fantastic. The seat is so comfy, the bell is way loud, all of the grimy gears are completely gone, the chain tension-er matches the fenders and stem. So cool! I loved my bike before and I love it all over again. It is so much lighter too with out all the annoying gears, I am a single speed believer.

Anyone who used to see my bike pre-transformation knows how rust covered it was, that former bike is unrecognizable now. I have always loved riding this bike and I have never been able to replace it, the best part is I don't have to and it is better that it ever was before.

Artists and craftspeople of South Boston will open their doors to the public Saturday and Sunday, October 31st and November 1, 2009, as part of the annual South Boston Open Studios event. Visitors will be able to talk to and make purchases directly from the artists while touring the creative environments in which the artwork is produced. The weekend-long event also provides a great opportunity to sample many of this historic neighborhood's restaurants, cafes & pubs.

Numerous disciplines will be represented throughout the dozens of participants, including: sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, installation, photography, video, jewelry, ceramics, woodworking, fabric and performance art. Much of the work will be in-process and the artists will be on hand for questions and conversations. Participating organizations and galleries include The Distillery (which will showcase three galleries and over 50 artists) located at 516 East 2nd Street, King Terminal at 110 K Street & 570 E 1st Street, and Norman Crump Studio at 793 East Sixth Street.

The event is free to the public, rain or shine, noon to 6pm each day. Public transportation is easy, take the Red Line to Broadway and walk East, or take the #7 City Point bus from South Station to Elkins St.

Things I have witnessed first hand

Sheryl & I attended Paper this spring at Harper's Ferry at a costume night and it was soo awesome! At one point a robot showed up and danced with all the kids dressed like pirates, otaku, ninjas, french maids, furry creatures and more. People went crazy for the robot doing the robot.

One time I saw people making out on the steps at the Boston ICA, actually come to think of it I see people making out at the ICA everytime I go. I have only seen the shark costume in an animation aired during Yo Gabba Gabba and the Elephant & Crocstume in my dreams.

Love pentagrams are exponentially worse thank love triangles, but nothing beats a bizarre love triangle. What could suck more than being in love with a girl who is in love with a different girl who loves a guy who longs for a dog who loves an ice cream cone that loves a girl's bee hive hair doo? UGH!

I've never actually seen a Tarzband but I am positive it would look exactly like this with Cheetah rocking out on the drums and Tarzan stupidly napping under an elephant.

Rock Band Network Drawings

The "Rock Band Network" website launched today and I have a series of promotional drawings created for the site. The first is an evolution design going from paramecium to hairy hipster animals to King.

Steps 1-5 break give an overview of how to author tracks for Rock Band. Musicians have their work reviewed ala threadless by a community of peers who get to test all the music.

About Fish McGill

Priding himself on being “an artist devoted to drawing,” Fish McGill’s new work, ROBOTS & HUNGRY ANIMALS, uses characters to communicate and question his involvement in and perception of society. He focuses on robots as literal and metaphorical machines that convey ideas on what it means to be human. According to Fish the robots “are each trying to fit in as members of society, beyond their limited functionality. You could say they’re in over their heads. Everybody can relate to wanting to be part of the fun or feeling anxious about biting off more than you can chomp.” When asked about the robots questioning society, he answers “you may think a robot is totally boring at first glance. But then you hang out and discover you both share an equal love of Prince or something else!”

He has exhibited at the ICA, Worcester Art Museum, LAB, in Massachusetts, as well as in New York, Montreal, and Japan. Fish’s work has been commissioned professionally by the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), the Berwick Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Nike, MTV, Deitch Projects, Company One, Harmonix Music Systems, IdN, Adobe, and The Weekly Dig. Fish earned his BFA in S.I.M. (New Media) from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Originally from Somerville, he lives in Quincy.

I created some promotional art for an inside/outside music project at work. The whole shebang came together in the form of an album called Oxytocin made by game developers at Harmonix organized by audio lead Arthur Inassi. Here is the jist:

"Presenting Oxytocin, a fresh compilation of some of the more exotic music to come out of Harmonix. You'll hear a few guitars, but there's lots more: Socially conscious hip-hop, adventurous loop-and-sample tracks, soaring electronic pop, and then some. Most of all, you'll hear what happened when a few of our creative types looked around, bonded over their left-of-center tastes, and let the creativity flow. The title, by the way, refers to a chemical that music triggers in the human brain—nothing to do with that stuff they're stealing down the street."

A Ginormous Email Thread Discussion

For the 3rd straight year Project SF painted the Northeastern University Spring Fest mural. This year was a super heroes theme (NICE!) and the group began discussing ideas (with a tangent here or there) in a lengthy email thread.

A Sketch of Ideas That Rose To The Top

Next comes the initial sketch and the Hulk smash was the unanimous favorite. After getting the focal point nailed down the rest falls into place. Lettering, super hero renditions in our own styles and lighting are the next elements picked. Last but not least: choosing the right palate of hero colors. A black base is key for getting spray paint to jump off the panels, all colors are up for grabs and we mostly riff off of Hulk green skin tones and shades of his purple pants.

Build & Buff The Panels

After a trip to the lumber yard and an afternoon assembling the wall on the driveway, the sketch is thrown up on the 6 panels to nail down the initial spacing. This always proves to be a huge help when the event comes; it's one less thing to think about and on the day of the event we can get right to work focusing on fine tuning.

Get to work

An all day affair gets going mid morning when we set up the panels and pray it doesn't rain. Once we have the whole thing standing it's time to get to work. You can only plan so far, you have to have fun with it and work with each other listening to suggestions and painting at your own pace. It's a long, fun-filled, fume-y day

Keep going, keep painting, keep workin' it

Crowds come and go as we paint. Somebody brought us a case of energy drinks and some tiny pizzas to keep our minds sharp. A few clouds formed, but no rain came our way.

Call it a day

By 5 o'clock we all take a step back and call it a day. The mural goes on stage each year for the Spring Fest concert and remains on campus for the rest of the year. It was a blast meeting students and creating a comic book inspired mural all day long along side awesome artists and great friends. I only wish I could have brought my 13 year old self to the event to see what was in his future.

George Harrison Birthday

Rumsey & I share a birthday with the only Beatle with his own #1 song each year on 2/25. I learned about sharing the same birthday with George from Mary Hart on "Entertainment Tonight" when I was in 2nd grade, they always wish happy birthday to celebs at the end of the show.

This year Rumsey & I teamed up to celebrate as a trio and collaborate as artists. The guests of our party each got a custom designed shirt; Rumsey crafted the timely numerals for our birth years and I worked on our mugs.

George is an Al Hirschfeld homage, Rumsey has his trademark eyebrow scowl and my face is draw from a photo City Girl Geis took of me in my former office at MassArt.

This Gear’s Model: Extremely General Tips on Finding the Right Gear for You

Slightly inspired by Garth's drum freak out fantasy in the music store in Wayne's World if he were a head banded lady drummer with sick tattoos and rad bandanna. Apparently the drum set looks appealing to some:

"I really love this series, really I do. Not going to lie, if I ever sat at the throne of that set in the last picture... I'd probably orgasm.... Triple bass ftw."

No Stairway temper tantrum by a couple of Hendrix & Specials posers respectively.

I visited guitar center and I was amazed how much product is installed on the walls to fill the space. Anxiety bubbled up when I began to imagine everything falling off the walls toward me. All the gear on a wall adds up to a fun environment for this husband and tiny wife duo to select their new instruments.

I love spelling things wrong, encountering fake brands with similar names to widely recognized ones = good times. This nerd band is based on Mark Mothersbaugh stories of creating music for Life Aquatic, Wes Anderson wanted "that old synth sound" for the sound track. Caitlyn Roy also makes an appearance on the left hand side.

Fashion Victim: Dressing like a Rockstar

These outfits are meant to be androgynous for each pair of weirdos but the hairy guy dressing as Madonna is just too funny for ambiguity. The Devo kids are super cool and would be intimidating or hillarious if you saw them at recess as a child. Another appearance by the lightning bolt shirt dude with the Hee Haw Fish boots. Last but not least are the Bowie twins based on a girl I saw dressed as the Ziggy Bowie during Halloween; I was floored over how cool her rendition of a lady Bowie.

VALENTINE’S DAY EDITION Jason Kendall’s True Rock’n’Romance Confessions

Brett Milano, the head writer on RockBand.com and author of a several books on rock music including "The Sound of Our Town: A History of Boston Rock and Roll", interviewed Jason Kendall about his life on the road deeply in love with his lady back home. Jason was the lead singer of the Amazing Royal Crowns in the 90s and toured a ton.

I was especially psyched to work on this drawing because I was a big time fan of the Crowns; I listened to "Do The Devil" a lot when I ran track in high school or did home work in the basement of my parents house.

It is Really Unlikely that Your Arm Will Suddenly Snap Off: Fear and Your First Show

On this particular week my drawing files did not make it into work (OH CRAP@) and I encountered a creative crisis. Not a problem! I rounded up a bunch of weirdos from other drawings and one rejected short fatso character for this piece on fear. I would be freaked out if I was in my tighty whities on stage, that's for damn sure.

The Gig from Hell: What Happens When Everything Goes Wrong

This disastrous list style recap had me in stitches when I read it and I pictured a minuscule crowd falling asleep while the band in turmoil attempted to set up their show. Another appearance of the boots! I keep drawing this specific type of boots that I designed, I am starting to want a pair of my own. Another favorite to do in each drawing is putting generic tattoos with hearts, crosses, waves and skulls.

Just Lust: A Guide to Making Your Fans Want to French Kiss You Big Time

Each week I have a vague idea of the story that will run and after a while I get into a flow knowing each writer's style and it is the most fun to imagine the whole piece before knowing the complete story. Having freedom and flexibility is the best part, the reaction from the writers and co-workers is also super fun. Hellion jumping on the bed in a t-shirt singing into a brush flanked by ghost rockers for a story on what makes a rock star sexy seemed to click in this case.

Personality Crisis: Tips on Getting Along With Your Bandmates

The original drawing for this story had the singer in a noose made from his mic, but Sheryl said I went too far. A keyboard through the chest is no problem though because nobody likes the keyboard players for some reason. I feel the worst for the xylophone player.

Old Jungle Chucks

Research firm IDEO came to my studio to talk about sneakers, specifically Chuck Taylors. After the talk the asked me to draw a pair that encapsulated the essence of what Chucks are.

My take on these 101 year old sneaker shoes: they survive. Old people outlive everybody and jungle animals have to have their wits about them to stay living in a wild forrest. I couldn't decide between just old people or just jungle stuff so I did some on each.

Business Card

I unearthed the business cards I made when I finished college during my "oh nine" desk cleaning today. I made these at home and handed them out during my job search after graduation; job search = fun times! I think I went on a dizzying array of interviews. Most people were confused when they looked at the card after talking to me, but a some told me they thought they were really fun. This was long before GMail too, yikes!

Recently I finished my new cards and I wanted to reference the original one I handed out before. I kept the "expert" status and a few robots made it into the scene. The design is recycled from a piece I made for the Worcester Art Museum' Art All State 2008 that did not end up getting used.

I liked making The Art All State scene so much I decided to re-appropriate it as my card, tall skinny style this time instead of the normal horizontal. When I hand it out it has several uses; it can be considered a small piece of art, you can draw on the back in the abundant white space or you can use it as a means of getting in touch with me.

The lovely Sheryl Pace (THANKS!) modeled these Converse lace ups for me. It was hard to give them to the person who commissioned them when I saw Sheryl in them. Erica Henderson from Harmonix asked me to paint on her boot, sneaker, leg corset, doo-dads. It was really fun!

Halloween Undies!

This Halloween I created a series of "Modest Monsters" to celebrate the ghoulish fun or something. The roster this year includes: the wolfman & Frankensteins in briefs, buck naked lady vampire & Dracula, mummy in matching bra/pantie set, topless eyeless zombie in garter belts and a reluctantly streaking zombie with one patent pump. I also tried to use the freakiest color combinations possible, strangely enough these color ways are inspired by watching some of the outfits on Golden Girls. Oliver Mak pointed out how outrageous some of the outfits the ladies wore on that show so I decided to refresh my memory, YIKES!

On a beautiful sunny fall October day Evoker and I set out to paint on Newbury Street on a lazy Sunday. We had visitors from across the globe (mostly Western Europeans and North Shore folks) who witnessed our efforts. My piece is filled with monsters in underpants surrounded by words that are scary or sweet (you decide which is which). Here is an incomplete list of the items:

Evoker created a killer ewok complete with golden tooth skull. As the sun began to set the two of us smiled at a hard day's work. We wolfed down sandwiches and called it a day.

My friends over at http://www.piratevsninja.net/ asked me to do a series of drawings for the header of their page. I didn't actually know they would use them, in fact they paid me in a substantial amount of bananas. When you go to their page a random pirate or ninja shows up on the left and right side. I think they could use a few more pirates and ninjas in their design but they only had so many bananas to pay me with.
